“That one special horse can change the course of the future…”

Anvil Arabians has continued to breed Oula, along with their beautiful collection of other mares, consistently seeing the horses improve year after year.

“You learn a great deal about your mares when breeding them every year,” says Alejandro, “You learn their dominant traits, and it allows you to pick 'better fits' for them year to year.”

“We’ve had 7 foals this year, and it’s our best foal crop yet,” Alejandro continues.

Part of that outstanding foal crop includes Oula’s newest 2023 Filly by Dominic M. This filly is sure to be a star, but will have big shoes to fill, because Oula’s previous foals are all impressive. Everest Anvil (by Sultan GK) is now under saddle and will show at U.S. National this year in the Hunter Pleasure Futurity, while Lou Lou Anvil and Tango Anvil (both yearlings by Sultan GK) won Regions 2 and Region 8 this year, and will be on the road to U.S. Nationals to represent the Anvil breeding program.

Oula is sincerely that one special horse, that changed the course of the future for the Vigils. She has paved the road for a beautiful breeding program with even more exciting curves ahead…to include an expected 2024 foal by D Seraj!

PART TWO - “That one special horse can change the course of the future…”

What’s Next? The show adventure began…Vigils now owned a very exciting, and exquisite show horse, but one that their children were attached to and they insisted should be part of the family. So they planned to keep Oula in training and show her, but that Ali, their son (9 years old at the time) would be the one to do so that year. Ali showed her at Region 2 that summer following the Auction, where she won the ATH Mare and the Vigils had a blast.

She and Ali went on the following summer to show at Youth Nationals and earn the Vigils their first National Championship title in JTH Mares, with an accompanying Reserve Championship title in JOTH Mares. Scottsdale Class Championships and U.S. National Top Ten titles would follow the next year in 2019, while Alejandro and Ana ventured into planning the breeding future for Oula as well.

While Oula showed in 2019, Alejandro and Ana were meeting other horses, breeders and had also made a handful of other horse acquisitions, that transitioned Anvil Arabians to not just an “own & show” program, but a breeding program as well. They had witnessed the stallion Sultan GK win the Scottsdale show that year, and selected him as their sire for Oula.

Eventually they’d have an excellent colt, Everest Anvil that went on to a reserve class placement in the large yearling classes of Scottsdale, and they chose to rebreed Oula back to Sultan GK along with some of their other mares.

Before they knew it, Anvil Arabians had gone from one beautiful white mare to 15+ horses on their 10-acre property in San Diego. Breeding the horses, building relationships with the foals and watching them grow brought Alejandro & Ana a great sense of joy. Along with the joy came a desire to really learn how the horses would produce and to see their breeding decisions continue to improve.

“That one special horse can change the course of the future,” and for Alejandro and Ana Vigil that horse was a beautiful white mare that the met over the New Years holiday in 2017, while on a trip to Scottsdale…

The Vigils were in town when they saw an advertisement for the Scottsdale New Years Arabian Farm tours, and thought that would a fun and nostalgic way to spend a few days. They had Arabians in years past while living in Mexico, but when moving to the U.S. were unable to bring the horses along. So when they happened upon these Arabian farm tours, they thought there was no better way to spend a few days.

They met the beautiful white mare, Oula Aljassimya at Sahara Scottsdale, and there was an instant connection with her… They considered the thought of buying a horse, but when they inquired were informed that Oula had been consigned to the upcoming Marquise Auction at the Scottsdale show and could not be purchased prior to that event. The Vigils were disappointed and perhaps a bit impatient, but knew in their hearts that Oula would be worth the wait. They visited her a on a few more occasions before the Auction took place, and Oula had not only stolen Alejandro and Ana’s hearts, but had also really connected with their two children Marina and Ali. In fact, the children had become SO attached to her, that they were too nervous to attend the auction, for fear that they wouldn’t leave as her owners and could not possibly stand the heartbreak.

Fortunately, for Alejandro & Ana however, the hammer fell in their favor and Oula was now to be a part of their family…they had the halter, the champagne and the photos to bring home to Ali & Marina.
